Chantry Fine Art Collection

Subject:  Portrait of a Young Lady

Artist:  John Downman ARA   [1750-1824] circle

Provenance:  see below

Date:    1785

Size:  Oval - painting 9.5” x 7.5”   frame 12” x 10”

Condition:  Fine

Frame:   John Downman was a pre-eminent painter of small portraits in the late 18th century and early 19th century, often working in coloured chalks.

He was the son of an Attorney and studied at the RA Schools, then working for a period in the studio of Benjamin West.

He exhibited at the Royal Academy and was elected ARA.

This portrait of an unknown beautiful young lady in coloured chalk on board is typical of his work, but an old label on the reverse seems to attribute it to M.C.Cockburn, an artist whom we cannot trace but who may have been working in Downman’s circle.

Lacking any firm provenance we have therefore attributed it to his circle.

It is in its original frame and has been sealed for many years. and has some minor refurbishment. It has not been opened and has very old sealing, plus an 18th century poem on the reverse which is dated 1787.

It dates from circa 1785 like the painting of her sister also in the site.

Condition is fine.

Size Picture 9 1/2” x 7 1/2” (oval)    Frame 12” x 10”(oval)
