Artist:  Henry Pickering (c1700-1771)

Provenance:  Signed and dated

Date: 1769    Size: 36”x 29”    Condition: Good    Frame: Sympathetic to the subject and of the time

The treatment of the dress is masterly and compares well with a similar portrait of the same period in the Tate Gallery.

Pickering was a fashionable and gifted artist in the style of Thomas Hudson, and spent some time in Italy learning his trade.

He returned to England in 1740.

Like Hudson and Reynolds he employed Van Aken as his drapery painter.

During the 1750s he travelled as an itinerant portrait painter in Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cheshire and North Wales.

From 1759 he was based in Manchester, where he died in 1771.

This superb painting of an elderly lady is from his Manchester period, and is signed and dated 1769.

Price: £2,500
